I was a bit shocked to be told recently our neighbor's cat Zena was diagnosed with high blood pressure. I never thought that cats could contract all sorts of illness just like us. In her 18 years now, she already has lost her hearing ability and must receive eye drops two times a day. Elderly care of cats is inevitable. Well, at least Zena has had a good life, being the master of not just one but two homes. Here's the post.

Domain tidbits from Uncle Hang

In domain investment, the difference between the west and the east can even be seen in how people are called in the news. For example, Frank Schilling would never be reported as little Frank or brother Frank in western news. But in China, domain investors are treated more like family members so they are intimately called by their nicknames such as little sister or fat boy.

Today's post is about Uncle Hang, a very successful investor I've read about in Chinese domain news for quite some time. Recently, I finally found out that his real name is Xiao Hang SHEN (沈晓航), and he started domain investment quite by accident.

In 1999, Uncle Hang spent $75 (500 yuan) to register to sell pallets. Overseas buyers looked at the domain name and thought it was a large Chinese company. They trusted the name and so bought a lot of pallets from him. There, Uncle Hang realized the power of domain names.

Uncle Hang is a long-term investor and seldom sells his domain names. His focus is premium names on mainstream extensions (.com and .cn), such as and He also likes to collect domain names in a set, such as and, or and A while ago, he acquired many 2C names such as,,, and He said once 2N and 2L became expensive, 2C started to look attractive.

Here are some more tidbits from Uncle Hang:
  • Domain market will be dominated by bulk trades: particularly 4i and 5N (both .com and .cn) or premium 6N .com.
  • It's still difficult for buyers and sellers to find each other.
  • Domain investment offers great return, but patience is required. ( took him 10 years of hard pursuit.)
  • .com is still the first choice in terms of investment.
  • New domain extensions have little value for end user companies.

If we look at Uncle Hang's experience with 2C .com and the fact that 3C .com can no longer be hand registered, can we predict that many (if not all) 4C .com domain names will become attractive because 4C is still short in length? I think we can.
